Bad Hyphens, 2023

Starting with Alonso’s explorations into border as site of connectivity or tool for exchange, early bodies of work such as Correct Degrees of Separation, Inter-acting, and Nexus begin to expand on ideas of interaction or possibility. While these realities can be true, it is often overseen that to access these potential functions, one requires certain privileges. And yes, the idea of possibility is one that is harshly cemented into the imaginary of the border, but it is also a dreamlike mirage that possesses a nightmarish underbelly for those that lack the access to navigate the border as tool.

Cozen, 2021

It is through a second grouping of works that include Cozen, Bad Hyphens Separate – Good Hyphens Attach, and Mirage, that the artist delves into the acknowledgement of the border as something physical. A space that still lives as an imaginary and as an abstract site of fluidity but remains a tangible place. In these explorations into the materiality of the site, a tension arises, highlighting that the experience of the border is neither monolithic nor binary. This realization allows for a more nuanced and inclusive depiction of the region's diverse experiences. And it is in these explorations, where that idyllic and wondrous portrayal of the border is tarnished as it materializes into a space that rejects, imposes, and becomes violent. The place is no longer just a site of possibility, it is also one of tension and disillusion.

Through the acceptance that this site holds more than one reality, one can begin to understand and acknowledge the multiplicities that are held by the region. These expanded depictions of the border also open a space for a more critical view of the region, a view that accepts possibility and potential, while understanding that the site is also one of conflict. It is in this third space that Alonso begins her new explorations and sets a foundation for her new video and large-scale sculptural work: looking at the border as a fractal or echoed liminal space, where nations, ideas, and realities simultaneously converge and diverge.

SCROLL

Inter-Acting, 2015

Ecos Paralelos – Parallel Echoes, by Haydee Alonso, is an interdisciplinary exhibition that combines video, photography, and sculptural works that explore the varied and complex realities of the United States-Mexico border region. From border as site of connectivity, symbolic space, to a global or geographic barrier, this monographic exhibition presents new sculpture and video alongside six contemporary jewelry works that both question and complicate perceived definitions of boundaries, borders, and human interconnectivity.
