This piece, an earring designed to be worn by two people simultaneously, explores the delicate balance of connection and restriction. Rooted in the language of jewelry, the work serves as a metaphor for the relationship between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, where the shared border functions as both a barrier and a bridge. The earring physically connects two individuals while imposing a limitation, embodying the duality of the region and the complexities of binational relationships.
Recently acquired by the El Paso Museum of Art for its permanent collection, “Bad” Hyphens Separate; “Good” Hyphens Attach is both an object and a conceptual exploration of the nuanced dynamics that define life in the borderlands.
