CORRECT DEGREES OF SEPARATION
Photographic Documentation of Performance, Mixed Media, 2014
This series of 49 photographs examines the dynamics of connection and division through the use of copper rings of varying sizes and circumferences. I crafted these rings as man-made borders, creating both physical and conceptual spaces for interaction.
The images feature two women dressed in black, positioned in various ways—sometimes touching, sometimes apart—but always joined by the rings. Initially, I assumed that smaller rings might foster more intimate interactions. However, the opposite turned out to be true: larger rings allowed both individuals to step inside the shared circular space, creating greater opportunities for connection.
The documented performances were improvised, allowing the participants to navigate the boundaries imposed by the rings. These performances reveal how borders can simultaneously constrain and enable interaction, acting as both barriers and bridges.
As architect Luke Yeung observed, “In order to achieve ‘borderless,’ we must [first] understand the space of the borders themselves.”
